Comprehensive down-to-the-studs remodel of this c.1940 home in a sought-after neighborhood overlooking downtown Portland, Oregon. A young couple with three kids and an adorable dog named Henry purchased the home, which needed renovation and fresh interior architecture. They requested inviting elegance, with put-your-feet-up, livable luxury.

The living room was taken down to the studs. The result is classic Northwest style, with balanced scale, gracious comfort, and refined color harmonies.

Custom designed paneling and three-piece crown help lift the ceiling. Paneling above the banquette was specifically designed to accommodate the black/gray painting by notable Northwest artist Michele Russo (1909–2004), also sourced by Maison, Inc. Banquette sofa designed and perfectly scaled by Maison, upholstered in a Jane Churchill fabric with Nancy Corzine contrast welt.

Tiny tall brass lamps are Annalari. The Demilune is Bennett. Table lamp is Hwang Bishop. The remarkable H chairs were vintage, reupholstered in Gretchen Bellinger linen velvet. Sofa is Kent from Hickory Chair in deep grape mohair, and the skirted leather ottoman is a custom Maison creation. New marble fireplace design by Maison, fabricated by Conrad Stonecutters in Portland.

Custom design rug by Kush Rugs in wool and silk.

Emerald De Gournay wallpaper in the dining room. A gold lattice mirror reflects hand-painted gold peacocks. Modern Eos Chandelier joins classic Karni bone-inlay lamps on the breakfront.

The Powder Room’s dramatic transformation was inspired by the client’s passion for haute couture. Liberated from its bland existence, this diminutive room —located off the center hallway on the main level—is dressed to impress in dazzling floor-to-ceiling Gucci “Marble” wallpaper. Urban Electric Hockney sconces in a custom paint color and an antiqued silver-leaf Tennyson mirror join a pedestal sink. No guest could forgot the discovery of dashing vision and decision found inside this formerly prosaic space.

The Butler’s Pantry off the kitchen went down to the studs and was rejuvenated from a dated and drab appliance depot to a deep and dramatic destination. This home bar has all the luscious detail that says: “Stay awhile. What can I get for you?”

The strength of darkness and seductive shine are magnified by Farrow and Ball’s “Mahogany” in a full gloss with seven coats. A warm walnut counter and backsplash, where an undermount sink from Kallista in a hammered nickel is joined by a Waterworks faucet.

Brass mesh and regency metalwork from England front the uppers. The bamboo hardware is from Modern Matter. Ceiling-mounted fixtures from Urban Electric illuminate the custom multi-piece crown designed by Maison and used throughout the home.

The family room is warmed by a Francois and Co. fireplace, and a shimmering Prato wallcovering on the ceiling.
